TITAN Crew
Founded in the fall of 1986 by a group of St. John’s parents whose sons encouraged (begged?) them to start a rowing team. The first boats – they are called "shells" – were Italian made of wood and canvas. It wasn’t long before boat makers realized that they could make more durable and stiffer boats out of fiber glass reinforced plastic and even more durable and even stiffer boats out of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The St. John’s Jesuit (nee: St. John’s) High School crew has four such shells currently.
Any TITAN interested in the ultimate team sport, one that exercises all the major muscle groups of the body, provides aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, and can be a lifetime sport and form of exercise should consider crew at St. John’s Jesuit.
The current coach is Rod McElroy who rowed at Harvard in the Varsity Lightweight 8 which won the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges championship and the gold medal in the Thames Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames, England. The crew competes in regattas both fall and spring in Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Culver, Dayton, Detroit, Indianapolis, Parkersburg, Pittsburgh, Westerville, Wyandotte and Scholastic National championships.
Titans have gone on to row at Harvard, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Fordham, Miami of Ohio, TOSU (The Ohio State University), Boston University, Boston College, Holy Cross, Dayton, Army, Syracuse, St. Joseph’s, Dartmouth.
Crew offers families of rowers many opportunities to travel with sons and siblings, to meet others of like mind, and to get involved with many aspects of the sport. Coach encourages parents to ride along in the safety/coaching launch during practices and to cheer with reckless abandon at the regattas.
